Coliform bacteria are a related group of rod-shaped bacteria. There are literally thousands of different strains of coliform bacteria. Most are not pathogenic (disease-causing)
Coliform bacteria are found throughout the biosphere. They can be found living in surface water, soil, groundwater and in the intestinal tract of warm blooded animals, where they may find its way into water sources in a variety of ways.
The total coliform bacteria test is used as a basic indicator of the presence of disease- causing organisms.
